A patient can be connected to a ventilator in basically two ways: by artificial airway or by mask. Artificial airways commonly include translaryngeal airways and tracheostomy tubes. About 75% of patients receiving PPV are intubated (95%with an oral ET and 5% with a nasal ET. A tracheostomy tube must be placed in about 25% of patients on PPV. The selection of an artificial airway establishes that invasive ventilation will be used. The remaining 25% of patients can be ventilated noninvasively.
